Doctor Gerard Furlong has enjoyed a long a distinguished career within the world of medicine since he graduated from St Bartholomew’s Hospital in 1992. Whilst an undergraduate at St Bartholomew’s Gerard played a very active part in student life on the campus representing St Bart’s in a number of sporting activities.
His proudest moment while representing St Bartholomew’s was undoubtedly his role in the victorious rowing team that swept all before them during the course of a three year unbeaten streak. The highlight of his illustrious career as a member of the rowing team was winning the United Hospitals Head of the River and Regatta in 1992 beating off stiff competition from hospital colleges and universities from around the country.
Whilst at St Bart’s Ged Furlong was also a member of the Veterans rugby union team and his medical training was invaluable on a number of occasions to patch up team mates and occasionally the opposition. Ged is also a keen and talented skier and represented the college on a number of occasions including the successful tour of Tignes in 1991.
With so many sporting achievements to fill his time and the hectic med school social life it is a wonder that he found any time to study and complete his exams. However pass them he did and he chose as his field of specialisation anaesthesia. The anaesthetist Gerard Furlong has worked in several hospitals in the UK including Dunganon Hospital in Northern Ireland and Coventry and Warwick hospital in the midlands.
He is widely regarded as an expert in a number of areas within the field of anaesthesia and is an active member of D.A.S (Difficult Airways Society) as well as SCATA (Society for Computers And Technology in Anaesthesia) for whom he has contributed a number of articles and worked on several projects for.
